Mother’s Day.
A single, sole date of the year on which mothers are honored by their children in many of ways:
Ditch daises picked by the little blond mini-me in her best dress, no shoes, and little pigtails blowing in the breeze as she runs yelling, “MOMMY! MOMMY! I picked you a flower.”
Candy chosen with care - ensuring all her favorites are there. Don’t forget the almond joys.
Handmade construction paper cards with painted handprints titled “I love you, Mom!”
Family get togethers with a plethora of food, laughter, story telling, and memories.
Breakfast-in-Bed made by the little tiny humans, hair still stuck up from waking up out of bed without bothering to brush their teeth - or their cowlick.
It is a beautiful thing to witness - a family. A real one. An unbroken one. A bond like no other.
It is also a feeling I have craved since before a time I can recall memories.
It is the reason for so many years I have woken up angry, and bitter.
It is the reason I will never know what it is like to have my phone ring and be able to pick up stating, “Hey, Mom. I called earlier to get that recipe you always make.”

There is a reason my answer is always, “I’ve had several Moms.”
You see… I am a Village Kid, amongst so many others.
I am a product of the phrase:
“It takes a village”
Family members who didn’t have to be there? Were.
Parents of friends who never had to take me to stores to buy clothes, invite me into their homes, treat me as one of their own, and include me in every single family vacation, outing, church trip? Did.
Teachers who never had to understand why I clung to them so, but let me anyways, because they knew all I craved was love.
Clients I have had who have believed in me with such ferocity, relentlessly providing a safe space.
Friends who were never obligated to have helped me? Have.

Happy Mother’s Day to each and every woman out there whether you are with your kids today or off bettering yourself to be the Mom the need.
Happy Mother’s Day to each and every woman who is a new Mom - cherish these moments, they go fast.
Happy Mother’s Day to the mom who are no longer around- including my own.
Happy Mother’s Day to each and every woman who would have been a mother for the first time this year - including myself - I am rooting for your peace today.
Happy Mother’s Day to each and every woman who has contributed to someone’s village - for you have made an impact on every soul you have touched.
To all you “Village Kids” who have ever felt unworthy of love, craved the feeling of a Mom, or felt as if you weren’t enough?
This one’s for you.
You may not have that one single person to call in…
But you do, without a doubt, have the entire village.
With Love,
M 🦋
