reunion
He noticed her within minutes of his toes hitting the sand. How he knew that it was her he’ll never quite understand but there was no mistaking the pull on his heart and the sting in his chest. He had been back for months and he had yet to run into her. Not at the theater, the grocery stores, not even her favorite coffee shop. He knew she hadn’t left for he would have heard. The town loved to talk even when the words shouldn’t be said; always weaving their stories differently each time. It was like a disease but everybody loved the symptoms. He knew why she hadn’t been around: she knew he was looking and he knew she didn’t want to be found. When he came home he found out her mother had passed about a month before and she had slipped into a state of seclusion. Not entirely closed off, but she wasn’t here. He’d left for the city nearly 2 years ago arriving home 3 months before. She had never left his mind no matter the time or day, what mood he was in or how the weather was outside. He had met thousands of women in the city, beautiful and rich women, and not one of them had caught his attention. It had been impossible to find a face that had freckles the way hers had splayed across her nose. He longed to hear her laugh or the way she mindlessly stamped her foot when she got mad. They’d said goodbye the day he left and after a few attempts to contact her he had given up. It was like a real life Deanna Carter song. He had two choices: head to meet his friends or embrace his fears.
From a distance he could hear his name being shouted over the consistent crashing of the waves but he kept to the left, ignoring the calls as if they were invisible.
She knew it was him before he got within 12 feet. She had been scanning the crowd earlier and knew she had seen a flash of red streaked blonde hair. She was reassured it was him when she heard the scuffling of his feet against the white sand; firm but cautious. And then noticed she didn't hear them any longer and she inwardly chuckled… He was always the type to recuperate before facing a big moment for him, one that made him vulnerable. To this day she still couldn’t come to terms the way she never allowed them to have a full closure but at that point in time, she honestly didn’t understand herself or her actions at all. She had known he’d been asking around; she still had friends here even though she was never seen often. She liked to keep to herself; people weren’t always keen to her way of thinking around here. She had a different kind of soul, not many could understand but the ones that did she held dear to her heart.
She decided to speak first, she owed him that much. By now she could catch a vague scent of his old cologne. Her heart took a dip but she took the leap.
“Remember that day you found the starfish and made me get it because you were too afraid to pick it up yourself? “
To her relief…. He laughed. He actually laughed.
“Yeah and then you decided to throw it back because we could always find another and it looked too healthy to take it so soon.” She could sense the grin in voice, shaky but getting more confident as the seconds passed.
He started to walk around to see her face and instantly noticed the freckles splashed along her nose and shins. He couldn’t deny the tug he felt. He couldn’t believe she was right in front of him. He wanted to grab her but he knew that wasn’t something she would let happen.
“ You couldn’t hide forever, you know that, Rach?” He said through a smirk.
She elegantly slid her Ray Ban aviators onto the top of her head, finally looking up at him, eyes as beautiful as the sunset. He had never known a girl to have so many different eye colors depending on the light; she was a living mood ring.
….. TO BE CONT.
